| Lilith~ This series is my exploration of the Lilith mythos stretching from ancient Sumerian to contemporary times, examined on three overlapping levels: I am exploring Lilith as myth; Lilith as an allegory for the history of women; Lilith as a singular experience within the life of a modern woman. All three levels attempt to deal with the evolution of sexuality, power, demonization, oppression, liberation and redefinition. Lilith is a sequential series of 9 six foot by nine foot paintings in which I have used oil and spray paint on sewn canvas. Each painting is strapped like a drum to a large, rusted metal frame. The figures are a combination of clear, developed areas where I pay great attention to detail, contrasted by whole sections which are loose, somewhat translucent and layered by stencil work. I strove for an effect that would render the feeling of movement and sensuality as well as tension and release. The resulting nine paintings are intended to connect with and examine the experience of "woman". archive • shop • contact • design • fashion |
